If is such a thing, what are the healthiest fast food choices?

The debate on this rages on and I think will continue on for a while yet.

But what is all the controversy about?

After all, food is food, and all food nourishes you, correct?

No that is not correct. Most fast food comes in oversized portions, is low in nutrition, high in trans fats, saturated fats, sodium, sugar and often more calories in 1 serving than you need in 1 day and even worse, more fat than is recommended for 2 days or more.

For instance you can buy something similar to a double burger with cheese from many fast food restaurants, add a medium serving of fries on the side, plus say an apple pie for desert. Now according to the American Heart Association, this would contain more saturated fat than it recommends for 2 days. Let alone the huge amount of calories.

Now I am not saying that you should never eat fast food, but what I am saying is, it should be seen a treat, and not a way of life. Also, at the time of ordering, try and make healthier food choices.

A few suggestions on how you can make the healthiest fast food choices are below;

One easy thing to do is to not buy any super sized meal, order regular size or even from the children’s menu.

Do not add any salt to the meal, there is already enough (too much) salt.

Drink either water, tea or decaf coffee, and forgo the regular “Fizz” drinks such as Cola’s.

If there are salads on menu, order one of those and forgo the fries.

Also forgo the bacon – sorry guys, I am like you and love my bacon and I find it is tempting to ask for added bacon. But Bacon is high in fat and calories so to add that to any say burger or sandwich meal just makes it worse.

Even those lovely bacon bits you can add to your salad are high in fat and calories, and have little nutrient value. Why not try extra onions, or tomato and some tasty mustard instead.

Wherever possible, instead of white bread, buns or rolls opt for the wholemeal or multigrain option.

It is a commonly know fact that eating fast food too often can lead to many health problems. It is said that over 70% of serious health problems are caused through poor nutrition. You do not have to become a statistic.

Just thinking about the healthiest fast food choices when you go to a fast food restaurant will pay big dividends for your health in the long run.

    I think you have some good suggestions here. Try as we might to avoid fast food restaurants, they are helpful for those of us who are on the go–occasionally when you don’t have time to prepare a meal. Knowing what options on the menu are the healthier choice is useful. I think that’s why the Eat This-Not That series is good. I also like a book published by the American Diabetes Association called A Guide To Healthy Restaurant Eating–I used to eat out a lot, and found their recommendations very useful when trying to stick with healthier choices.
