Healthy Foods-Types of Fish to Eat

Fish, if consumed regularly can save a person from many problems like arthritis, poor eyesight, high cholesterol and some other cardiovascular problems, miscarriage and pregnancy complications, depression and many other health problems.

In fact fish is known as the ultimate anti aging food since it is nutritious and the proteins and omega 3 fatty acids keep the body well maintained, healthy and rejuvenated. Eating the wrong kind of fish however, can be very harmful indeed. So it is very important to know what types of fish to eat. All sorts of fish have some traces of mercury in them. Fish becomes dangerous when the level of mercury is too high. This high level of mercury can be particularly harmful if consumed by pregnant or nursing women.

It is highly recommended that two servings (approximately 12 ounces) per week of fish that are low in mercury  is quite sufficient, especially for women and small children. When you are trying to find out about the types of fish to eat the first thing you should know is that the smaller the size of a fish the lower will be the mercury level. The reason is simple. Larger fish have longer life spans that give them time for more mercury buildup in their bodies as compared to smaller fish.

The fish and seafood that have the lowest mercury levels and are the best types of fish to eat include Whitefish, Oyster, Trout, Perch, Tilapia, Pollock, Squid, Salmon, Sole, Sardines, Shrimp, Scallop, Mullet, Anchovies, Mackerel, Catfish, Herring, Clam, Haddock, Crab, Flounder and Crawfish. The recommended intake of these fish is two servings that equal 12 ounces per week.

The other best types of fish to eat have relatively higher mercury levels but according to FDA are placed in the category of moderate mercury level fish. These fish are Tuna (canned), Bass, Snapper, Perch, Carp, Monkfish, Cod, Mahi-mahi, Lobster and Halibut. Try to eat six or less servings of these fish per month and pregnant women and children should try to avoid these types of fish.

The types of fish to eat only three servings or less per month are Bluefish, Grouper, Tuna Yellow fin and Sea Bass. Women and young children should generally avoid these fish. Next are the fish which have very high mercury levels and should not be eaten at all. These fish are Tuna Ahi, Marlin, Tilefish, Swordfish, shark and Orange Roughy.
