Healthiest Fast Food – An Open Discussion

healthy fast foodHi everyone, and welcome back. Today I would like to open a discussion by asking a question – so here it goes.

Question:  What is probably one of the most secure industries in the world at this moment?

Answer: The Fast Food industry!

Most of us look for the quickest food choice option when we are on the move, so it does not appear that fast food joints will disappear from the busy streets, or food courts any time soon.

From a healthy eating point of view, the question has to be whether we succumb  to it, or find a healthy fast food source. Does healthy fast food even exist?

Turning a blind eye is probably an option most people would take some of the time, thinking that it is really not that important.  Heck even healthy eating institutions condone the very occasional fast food meal.

Also, these days many of these fast food eateries cater for children’s parties to which Granddad or Grandma are invited where they may be asked to “share a meal.” But even in this circumstance, low fat options are available in most places.

So if  the fast food industry is a secure industry, then healthy eating fast food is becoming a large part of the operation, (as I’m sure the management of these places know only too well). While many of us need to eat on the move, there are certainly enough people around who don’t want to compromise on their healthy eating plan.

There are options for healthy fast food, even if we tend not to define it as such,

Examples:  a banana, an apple, a cucumber, grapes, a pear, stone fruit plus many others and/or a combination of these can be eaten when on the run.

Additionally, if you know you are going to be away for the day, and most of us would have some notice of this, why not prepare a meal such as a salad chilled and stored in an ice cooler?  It is definitely cheaper for families to do this, and also you know that you are feeding them a nutritious meal.

How about a Sweet potato salad, a green salad and a couple of boiled eggs?

All of these and many more can truly be called, THE ORIGINAL FAST FOOD. It’s all in the perception. “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.”

The best fast and healthy option for many of us is a fresh made sandwich. Certainly, the number of sandwich chains around the country is testament to how much people enjoy a good sandwich, and the advantage is that sandwiches are readily customizable. Admittedly, not all sandwiches are healthy, but it is up to you how you have them. A chicken salad sandwich on whole grain bread with no mayo is certainly healthier than a burger and fries, and the level of variation compared to burgers means that it is a choice that need not get boring. Most sandwich shops also do wraps, pasta salads and other variations.

So it’s all up to the individual, there’s no doubt in my mind however that there could be a connection between the fast food industry and obesity.
