Raspberries come under the category of fruit known as aggregate fruits. Each berry is formed by a number of drupelets arranged in a circular pattern around a cavity that is hollow. They have a sweet taste and come in variety of colors like red, black, blue, purple, orange, yellow and white etc. Raspberries can be found all year round but the best are available from June till October.

Although small in size raspberries have a very great nutritional value and are extremely delicious. They are extremely rich in some nutrients and have considerable quantity of others. Intake of raspberries is very good for health in a variety of ways since they have a much higher nutritional value than many other fruits and vegetables.

One of the biggest health benefits of raspberries is perhaps the presence of manganese and vitamin C in them. The consumption of one cup of this fruit means that two thirds of the daily recommended intake of manganese is taken care of and so is half of the daily intake of Vitamin C.

Both these nutrients are crucial for many vital functions and promote a healthy immune function. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant and along with the other antioxidant vitamins like vitamin A and E, it protects the body from the damage of free radicals.

Raspberries are also rich in many minerals like copper, phosphorus, iron and magnesium etc. Iron and copper promote the healthy production for RBCs therefore anemic people should consume raspberries regularly. These minerals are also responsible for maintaining a healthy heart rate and normal blood pressure.

Raspberries have high concentration of ellagic and phenolic compounds along with many other very beneficial phyto-chemicals. These compounds are known for their ability of fighting cancer and neuro-degenerative diseases. These compounds also slow down the signs and effects of aging and reduce inflammation and muscular degeneration.

Raspberries are also rich in dietary fiber. Due to this the intake of raspberries promotes a healthy gastrointestinal function. The fruit also contains considerable amounts of Vitamin B6 and Vitamin K. These vitamins work with proteins and other nutrients to keep the body’s various functions healthy.

You can clearly see that raspberries have numerous health benefits but there are a few precautions to be taken when eating raspberries. Raspberries are rich in oxalates. Too much concentration of oxalates in the blood caused crystallization. So individuals who have kidney or gallbladder problems should avoid taking too manys raspberries.
